New Years Day- wandering around Merida

After sleeping in, we were greeted to a breakfast of Cochinita Pibil.   The story given by Larry, our BnB host is that the men work 6 days a week.   On Saturday nights they stay up all night drinking beer and cooking this dish of marinated pork wrapped in banana leaf and roasted in the ground.  We put it on tortillas with some salsa...yummy!

We then headed into town to see the market and book some tours.

At the first market in the square, Gillian couldn't pass up the churros..

The main market appeared to be closed most of the day due to the holiday, but we managed to find some tacos.

We wrapped up our afternoon buying some supplies at the grocery store and trying to find a chocolate place (all of which were closed).   We ended up going to dinner and still exhausted, we called it an early night to rest up for a full day of ruins and cenotes.
