Jan 2 - Kabah

We went to Kabah and had the place basically to ourselves.

Our guide taught us a lot about the Mayan culture.  One thing we saw was a sacred Ceaba trees where the roots were the underworld the trunk was the existing world and leaves were the heavens.  The female tree produced a cotton-like flower.  The male tree has thorns.  When you knocked on the tree it sounded hollow, but obviously it wasn't.

On the buildings themselves there are many masks.  Elephant like noses that represented water, eyes, mouths, ears and earrings.  There were also snakes which represented the ground.  The buildings had arches designed by the Mayans.

The buildings were built to collect water for the crops.  The water would flow from the buildings thought troughs to the sistern.

This was an archway to start the beginning of the road to Uxmal.  Fortunately, we were taking the highway.

Off to Uxmal!
